Gotta Have Faith

Growing up in 1980's rural Wiltshire requires more than a little patience, especially when you're gay and trying to be a good Christian, with a love for George Michael.

This testament is a nakedly honest, funny and poignant story, of one man's journey through drugs, sex, abuse and self acceptance from Neil Maxfield, cabaret artist and creator of the five-star West End Musical Theatre Walking Tour.

Don't miss a show that is heartbreakingly familiar to anyone who knows rock bottom is only a careless whisper away.

Bluewater

Bluewater, (5 stars ★★★★★ London Pub Theatres) by Grace Quigley, is told through the eyes of a seventeen year old girl, funny and charismatic this ordinary teen is embarking on a remarkably queer weekend concerned with MSN, Cigarettes, vodka, shag bands and how much thong is too much thong, she could really do without her Saturday night house party taking an unexpected yet dreaded dyke driven turn.

Dylan Dodds: GroundDodds Day

Do you ever get Déjà vu?

Dylan’s last show (“an innovative way to experience a quarter-life crisis” – the Wee Review) ended with him deciding to have children. Since then he’s been stuck in a time loop. Yes, exactly like that film. No, Bill Murray isn’t in this…

If you’ve ever felt like nothing you can do will change things... This show is for you. If your thoughts go round like windmills, getting stuck down rabbit holes… This show is for you. If you enjoy copious amounts of repetition... You get the idea.

Join Dylan in the loop and find out how he got stuck in the first place, and what really makes him tick, tick, tick, BOOM.

Do you ever get Déjà vu?

LEOTARDS, MUSIC, SATIRE,

AND THE BRITISH DREAM

United Kingdom, 23rd of June, 2016.

The Great British Country has spoken — We are no longer Europe.

So unfortunately, Europeans, you are no longer welcome.

But attention! We still are a kind and inclusive country, with an undeniable sense of justice. And tonight, we will give a lucky European a chance to remain in this, our great Great Britain.

Tonight, our contestants, carefully chosen among thousands of thousands, are all ready for their Europeanness to fade. But only one, only the winner of tonight's contest will become… MISS BREXIT.

“I think this piece is deeply relatable to any person who had to move, doesn’t have to be London even. The issue of having to decide how deeply you want to assimilate and loose some parts of your identity in the process is very accurate.” [Audience Member]

This show was created with real people’s stories. They all deal with the consequences of Brexit affecting their lives in England and their future as performers.

It satirically explores the struggles of being a migrant, boldly shedding light on effects of cultural assimilation.

“I enjoyed it from beginning to end, we couldn’t stop laughing.” [Audience Member]

Death and Life in Ashmire

Death and Life in Ashmire

"We are many Severinos. The same life and the same fate: To break these stones, sweating over them, the fate of trying to wake this arid land, trying to pull a harvest... out of ash." This Severino, however, decides to leave the barren hills of his country, Ashmire. In his path, death comes in many forms: Sharpshooters, Alchemists, Landowners, but he won't stop until he finds a better life on the violent cliffs of Brynemere.

Double Jinx's "Death and Life in Ashmire" is a fantasy adaptation of the epic Brazilian poem "Death and Life of Severino", starring Jonathan Cuenot & Yuri Furtado.

This physical theatre show offers a mime-fuelled nosedive into the fantasy world of Tephra: the post-medieval realm in which all of Double Jinx's work is set. A planet of sword-swinging, gunslinging and alchemy brewing warfare.

This is a work-in-progress showing, offering a silly-serious story about Death, more specifically the amount of Death necessary to get a migrant to the place they want to be.

Every travelling Severino walks through the valley of the shadow of Death, stepping over the bones of past Severinos. All migrants, be they from Earth or from Tephra, have to cross a long bridge made up of their ancestor's remains in order to reach their destination - Life. A decent Life.

And when we finally die, all migrants know that our bones will become the bridge that future Severinos cross to get even further - Even further because they won't settle for decent. They'll want good Lives.

And so the cycle of Death & Life continues, slowly but surely, wave after wave of immigration, we guarantee better Lives for our newborn Severinos.

BREAK A LEG!

Emma is your typical theatre-obsessed university student who dreams of getting into RADA —only, she can never land a good role. She’s constantly passed over in favour of resident primadonna and queen bee, Ashley, who is cast as the lead in every show. Emma is on her third-year of university and it’s her last chance to make it big with the school’s end-of-year production of Macbeth. Only, she’s once again overlooked, and to add insult to injury is cast as the understudy for Ashley’s Lady Macbeth.

Emma strikes a deal with the devil: she’ll be Ashley’s personal assistant/slave in return for the opportunity to perform as Lady Macbeth for just one night. But when Ashley reneges on their deal, Emma swears revenge.

Meet Me in the Morning - Tales, Lies & a Tribute to Bob Dylan

Meet Me In the Morning is a concert with a twist. All songs are linked and intertwined with short scenes based on tales (and lies) about Bob Dylan's life and works. It is a surreal, stylistic, and Dylanistic ride where the Joker and the Thief meet for the first time, and they soon realize they have some kind of connection. The conflict between the characters has a strong "Waiting for Godot" feel and evokes confusion, recognition, and emotion in the audience. The show touches on subjects like friendship, dreams, love, and war. Topics that, undeniably, are as timeless and ever-relevant as many of Bob Dylan's songs and lyrics.

The Windrush Warriors

The Windrush Warriors is a dramatic comedy. The show will affect people’s emotions whilst also making them laugh. The Windrush scandal is exposed and also the real-life trauma that affected so many innocent people. The Pensioners share funny and heart-breaking insight into the experience of Caribbean migrants who helped shape the UK and are now being treated like undesirables. And their answer to this treatment? To fight adversity with Warrior like ferocity! (short version)

The Windrush Warriors is a dramatic comedy. The story exposes the Windrush scandal however the show is life-affirming. After living here all her life, an elderly black woman is having her immigration status investigated. Will she be deported? Her friends rally round & they form a ’fight back group’, The Windrush Warriors. The Pensioners share funny and heart-breaking insight into the experience of Caribbean migrants who helped shape the UK and are now being treated like undesirables. And their answer to this treatment? To fight adversity with Warrior like ferocity! Raising awareness about the Windrush scandal via the lens of theatre is a key aspect of the play and the theme of the play is courage under fire.

We see how a government betrayed people that a previous government welcomed. Together these 4 pensioners interact with varying degrees of response to this very real threat to their lives and they strike a balance between comedy and sobering drama. These pensioners experience the joys & angst of their golden years and come together when faced with cruel and unjust treatment. The fact that the script is based on true events makes for an interesting, entertaining and socially conscious show.

I Am Yours Sincerely

“It’s interesting. Such is the blessed quality of the human memory, that it is the happy and amusing incidents which prevail, and the worst moments become the most humorous and the most agreeable for reflection.” John Cox MC

I Am Yours Sincerely is the untold, true story about John Cox, and his times, during the Second World War, as a member of the Special Operations Executive (S.O.E.), also known as ‘Churchill’s Secret Army’ and ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’.

This secret organisation, formed in 1940, was given the remit by Winston Churchill to ‘set Europe ablaze’. They worked with the local resistance in occupied Europe and the Far East to sabotage the enemy and gather valuable intelligence.

John’s mission as part of the so-called Jedburgh teams was to parachute behind enemy lines, conduct reconnaissance and espionage; their tagline being Surprise, Kill, Vanish.

This is John’s story of friendship, bravery and love; written using many of his own words from memoirs and letters which he signed off ‘I am yours sincerely’.

His heartbreakingly unbelievable story follows him from university to decorated war hero, mission successes and failures and evading capture for which he was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre. At the end of the hostilities, while recovering in Ceylon, he met a young F.A.N.Y. (Field Auxiliary Nursing Yeomanry), there as an S.O.E. morse code operator and his wife to be.

The actor and writer of this solo show Ed Saunders-Lee is John’s step-grandson and is a recent graduate of the Guildford School of Acting. This year marks the 80th anniversary of John’s first mission in France and future plans include taking the play to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer, where it will be performed on the exact anniversary of his first, dangerous parachute jump.

Re:Name

It's a solo and autobiographical performance exploring the hidden depths of my real name. Beyond its sound and shape, a name carries stories, histories, and a unique cultural identity.

As an immigrant, I once was ashamed of my real name because I disliked the stories it carried. I disliked the sound when it was mispronounced. I wanted to fit into a culture that was unfamiliar to me; I wanted to be remembered. As a result, I chose a random English name to represent myself so that everything would be easier.

But, to be honest, who am I?

The performance “RE:NAME” integrates the transformative elements of Renee Emunah's Self-Revelatory Performance to unearth personal histories behind a name, forge connections, and create my own narratives. It also explores the unique challenges of integrating into a totally different culture and the profound impact this has on our daily lives. It offers new insights and a transformative experience of perceiving one's name origins and its special meaning to our unique life journey.

A Girl is a Haunted House

'I wonder if he has trust issues. Death. He thinks I'm trying to get away from him but that's only because he never tells me when he's coming. It's all just a big misunderstanding really. I think he's just playing hard to get.'

A Girl is a Haunted House is a one woman show tiptoeing the line between storytelling and standup. Although a broadly feminist show riffing on the millennial female experience, it also covers universal themes such as love, death, societal expectations, and THE HORRORS.

Using the allegory of a haunted house there is an element of camp and joy that pervades an otherwise darkly observed view of the role of women in our still broadly patriarchal society. Plus, there's rap too! Come or I'll haunt you!

At War with Myself

At War with Myself – ‘Why go where you’re not wanted?’ So asks a gay theatre maker, who puts down the bottle to pick up a gun, recklessly joining the British Army whilst the LGBT+ ban was still callously enforced.

Inspired by actual events, Jon Hague, veteran of multiple deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland, raises the curtain on the unexpected consequences, often ludicrous, always emotive, of the inevitable conflict of cultures, personalities and ideologies when a thespian goes unscripted into battle with himself and the army.

Devised and developed with Arts Council England Lottery Fund grant support, directed by Lisa Millar, design by Damian Stanton, composer Isa Suarez.

Rules Schmules: How to be Jew-ISH

Suzie Depreli – not a typically Jewish name, is it? – brings you one woman's passive aggressive mission to educate the world about what it means to have an orthodox family that ate sausages, an Asian Catholic husband that uses more Yiddish words than her Nana, and celebrate Passover without believing in God. And that this is all ok! With original songs performed live and anecdotes that will have Jewish and gentile audiences alike feeling like they were present for it all, this is how to be Jew-ish in Britain today.

The Last Night Out

The Last Night Out

It's been a year since Sophie vanished from David's life without a word but now, just as suddenly as she disappeared, she's back. The two former friends meet at a pub in London, David desperate for answers and Sophie wanting to pretend like nothing ever happened. Over the course of the evening they try to work out who they even are to each other now and slowly come to realise that there's a lot more going on behind the scenes of their lives than they originally thought.

The Last Night Out is an Offie nominated comedy/drama play about friendship, love and self-worth. A little bit light, a little bit dark, funny, irreverent and bittersweet. Paul M Bradley's debut piece is a classic slice-of-life tale.

Reviews from the Brighton Fringe production (2023):

"This is a touching work, alert and intelligent to the way friendship could be something more, or less than love... There’s a truth to the development of these characters that’s rare to encounter on the Fringe." - Simon Jenner: FringeReview.com

"Bradley’s script has a gorgeous flow that beautifully touches on serious issues about self worth and addiction." ★★★★ - Josiah Eloi: West End Best Friend

Refuge

Refuge

"Refuge" is a one-person play that tells the story of Braham, an ordinary shopkeeper who is forced to leave the comforts of his home and take a perilous journey as he becomes a refugee. Braham describes how his hometown is slowly attacked and destroyed. And as the carnage gets closer to his own house, he makes the difficult decision to take his family and run for safety, by whatever means necessary. Along the way, he is helped by some, taken advantage of by others, and has his and his family’s lives threatened on numerous occasions. All throughout, he reminisces about the priceless memories he leaves behind, as the play jumps back and forth in time. The audience experiences how his life was as beautiful, as real and as human as their own. "Refuge" has been staged 3 times in the past to great audience reviews. Most recently, "Refuge" was presented at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in 2023, where it received an Encore Producers Award and invited to perform for an additional weekend.Facebook: events/707980081499740/

Dent in the Moon

Dent in the Moon is a fun interactive clown show, following the journey of two old men (Luno and Suno) as they embark on the unthinkable... falling asleep. Merging live music with slapstick comedy who knows what would happen? They will try whatever means possible for them to catch forty winks; even if that means setting the house on fire (no fire was used and abused in the making of this show).

Tales From the Wasteland: Post-Apocalyptic Improv

An improvised post-apocalyptic adventure comedy. Our talented and hilarious cast of wastelanders will take a single suggestion from you and craft an entire narrative before your eyes with no pre-prepared characters, story or dialogue. If the world was ending, what would be the one thing you’d want to survive? Our band of dystopian adventurers will explore a new world and find out what’s left over after Earth’s devastation. Expect raiders, mutants and violence over scarce resources in this absurd dark comedy inspired by classics of the genre such as Mad Max, The Last of Us and Fallout. This show is not recommended for children due to the tendency to have dark themes, violence and cannibalism. Seriously, cannibalism comes up way too often.

Mrs Pack

Mrs Pack

July 1689. Princess Anne finally gives birth to a child who survives beyond a few hours. But the young prince is unable to feed. An urgent call goes out to the nation: whose milk can save the heir to the throne? This musical by Nia Williams, based on a real wetnurse who turned the royal court upside down, shows women at the heart of power — but ultimately powerless.

A pain in the neck? Or an outspoken woman? The real Mrs Pack has all but disappeared. But for a short time in the 17th century she was hailed as the saviour of the Protestant Stuart dynasty, and found herself at the centre of a system that relied on women to produce and raise future monarchs, while placing the value of their male children far above their own.

Reviews for the Edinburgh Fringe production (2022):

'Bright and lively but very moving' — FairyPowered Productions (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

'Entertaining, profoundly moving and thought-provoking'—Fringe website feedback

'Superb ... My standout show of the Fringe'—Fringe website feedback

Noli: Too Long/Too Difficult/Too Raw Short Film Festival

Making its third appearance, and now at its new home of Etcetera Theatre in Camden, Noli is the festival for short films too experimental, too daring, too ‘amateur’ or simply too long for the mainstream circuit. Running roughly twice a year, we want to establish an independent network of our own that values cinema and creativity, outside of the corporatised events that have come to dominate the scene.

With this event, you are buying into cinema culture, which means having an atmosphere to be part of, a place to hang out, your own corner of London that works for you and you work for it (ie. you enjoy it!).

'After the fall of the Pahlavi dynasty in Iran in 1979 a new age of totalitarianism and religious authoritarianism gripped that ancient land. On 13th Sept 2022 Mahsa Amini was arrested in Tehran by Iran's so-called Morality Police - who routinely subject women and girls to arbitrary arrest, detention, torture and other ill-treatment for not complying with the regime's discriminatory veiling laws. Mahsa was violently beaten while being forcibly transferred to Vozara detention centre. Within hours she was transferred to Kasra Hospital having fallen into a coma. She died three days later. In the ensuing protests over 500 people were killed by police, including women and at least 68 children. 'Trauma' by Mehrnoosh Khorsand is set against this backdrop of gross human rights' abuses and judicial killings by the Tehran regime. Leila, a young refugee from Iran is in a London hospital - traumatised and hallucinating. Separated from her young daughter Leila's trauma is manifested through a disconnect between her reality as a patient under observation in a mental health ward and past events in Iran. She struggles to tell the difference between her hallucinations and reality, unsure if she'll find her young daughter. She's unsure too if she can trust anyone or if she can finally break free of the bonds of a grotesque oppression.'

Shotgunned

Shotgunned tells the story of Dylan and Roz, a couple who unexpectedly fall out of love.

It is a poignant and humorous reflection on the messy and the beautiful in relationships and how we can come up against a dead end, no matter how much we care for each other. It also speaks about our dreams and the courage and resilience it takes to follow them. In equal parts hilarious and heart-breaking, Shotgunned is a relatable and intimate piece of theatre about the people we lose that shape who we become.

Written and directed by Matt Anderson, Shotgunned is Kangaroo Court’s debut theatrical production. It comes to The Etcetera as part of a UK-wide tour, performing at theatres in Cornwall, Exeter, Bath, London, Brighton, and Edinburgh.

'You find yourself laughing out loud one moment and gripping for tissues the next… Shotgunned breaks your heart, patches it together and then breaks it again.’ - FalWriting

‘Despite focussing on a break up, Shotgunned is very funny throughout.’ - ★★★★★ The Packet

Slush Pile

When the prestigious Piccadilly Press opens to unsolicited submissions, three interns are tasked with sorting through these unrepresented novels and finding one which is worth publishing. To the surprise of the managers and the interns alike, the so-called slush pile is in fact filled with thousands of great works of literature, making the task of deciding impossible.

Meanwhile, esteemed BAFTA-winning actor Virgil Riga finds himself growing tired of a film world dominated by generic franchises and scripts written by committees and algorithms. His frustration at the state of the entertainment industry spills out into a debate about AI and the rights of actors and artists, which soon crosses over with the interns' concerns.

Mad Women: The life -and death- of three women artists living with bipolar

Witty, fierce and fearless. Mad Women is a play inspired by three outstanding Latin American women artists who struggled with bipolar disorder. It is a fictional portrayal of Frida Khalo, Violeta Parra and Judith Marquez’s mental journeys from life to death, in the form of intertwined monologues.

From its own name, Mad Women fights the stereotypes and stigmas of what has historically meant to “be a woman” with mental health challenges. This is a brutally honest conversation about sexuality, motherhood, gender oppression and the role of women in arts, as artists and muses.

Mad Women is a project funded by the Arts Council England and led by Latinx director and playwright, Constanza Hola Chamy. It has been produced in partnership with St Margaret’s House, London.

THE HUNGER ARTIST by Franz Kafka (EXTRA DATE DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND)

THE HUNGER ARTIST by Franz Kafka (EXTRA DATE DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND)

What is Art? And what does it mean to be an Artist?

Franz Kafka’s ‘Hunger Artist’ nourishes his soul the only way he knows how,

by starving himself, in his small, barred cage, before crowds of spectators, some admiring, some sneering and contemptuous.

Seeking acclaim for his craft and acceptance, validation and perhaps love from his audience, this is his ‘art’ and, though often torturous for him, he will stop at nothing in his pursuit of perfection.

This is Franz Kafka’s final work and in the centenary year of Kafka’s passing, we celebrate his life and work with this solo retelling of this dramatic short story.

Kafka was editing "A Hunger Artist" on his deathbed, a story whose composition he had begun before his own throat closed to the point that he himself could not take any more nourishment.

Actor: Jonathan Sidgwick
